The chuppah is the canopy that stands over you during the ceremony, and it's meant to symbolize the home you're building together. Here's what to consider as you choose yours.

What a Chuppah Actually Needs

At its simplest, a chuppah is a cloth stretched over four poles, open on all sides. Many couples use a tallit — a prayer shawl, often a family heirloom — as the canopy itself, which adds a layer of meaning beyond decoration. Others go with fabric chosen specifically for the wedding, from simple linen to elaborate embroidered silk.

Traditionally, especially in Orthodox practice, the chuppah is set up with open sky directly above it. If you're marrying indoors, some venues build in a skylight opening specifically for this reason — worth asking about if it matters to you.

Choosing a Style

Chuppah styles range widely. A few common approaches:

Floral chuppahs use a wooden or metal frame draped in flowers and greenery — striking for photos, but they need a florist experienced in building structures, not just arrangements.

Fabric-draped chuppahs keep things simpler: sheer or solid fabric over birch, bamboo, or metal poles. These tend to be easier to transport and reuse, and pair well with string lights or lanterns for evening ceremonies.

Family tallit chuppahs use a prayer shawl passed down through the family, sometimes held up by four honored guests instead of poles. This option carries the most sentimental weight and needs the least additional design work.

Who Holds It

If you're not using a freestanding frame, you'll need four people to hold the poles throughout the ceremony — often parents, siblings, or close friends. It's worth choosing people who can comfortably stand still for the length of your ceremony, and giving them a quick walkthrough beforehand so nobody's caught off guard.

Indoor vs. Outdoor

Outdoor chuppahs need a backup plan for weather — most venues can move a ceremony indoors on short notice, but it's worth confirming this ahead of time rather than assuming. Indoor chuppahs give you more control over lighting and decor, but double-check with your venue about anything that needs to be secured to the ceiling or floor.
